We gathered some of the best experts in the field, Georgina Kyriakoudes, Ahmed Abdulla, Dimitri Neocleous, Dr. Alice Loveys to share their experience in the industry and discuss with us the latest updates in the sphere of Healthcare! In its third series of webcasts, Block.co gathered 253 people watching the event from 59 different countries, for a 90-minute webcast where guests answered participants’ questions.
Below is a list of the questions that were made and were not answered due to time constraints during the Blockchain in Healthcare webcast. Please note that the below information is only for educational purposes!
Question 1: I like what Dimitrios was saying regarding ownership and transfer. Health and social care have invested much in Information Management systems and processes. Transfer between NHS and social care is a typical block. Can you elaborate on how the blockchain sits across that – leapfrogs yet goes with the grain of what is already there in terms of shared records protocols, the exponentially growing types of professionals, pharmacists, careers, etc. that need early access to these records for better decision making.
Block.co Team Answer: Blockchain technology has the potential to improve healthcare, placing the patient at the center of the health care ecosystem, while providing security, privacy, and interoperability of health data. Blockchain could provide a new model for health information exchanges and transform electronic medical records to be more efficient, disintermediated, and secure. While it is not a cure, this new, Blockchain in Healthcare rapidly evolving field provides a sandbox for experimentation, investment, and proof-of-concept testing.
Healthcare systems around the world are preparing road maps that define critical policy and technical components needed for nationwide interoperability, including:
  • Ubiquitous, secure network infrastructure
  • Verifiable identity and authentication of all participants
  • Consistent illustration of authorization to access electronic health data, and several other requirements.
However, current technologies don’t totally address these necessities, and as a result, they face limitations associated with security, privacy, and full ecosystem interoperability.
Blockchain technology creates distinctive opportunities to scale back complexity, improve trustless collaboration, and create secure and immutable data. National Healthcare Systems need to track this rapidly evolving field to identify trends and sense the areas where government support may be needed for the technology to realize its full potential in health care. To form blockchain’s future, they ought to take into account mapping and gathering the blockchain ecosystem, establishing a blockchain framework to coordinate early-adopters, and supporting a pool for dialogue and discovery.

Question 2: What about the “compatibility” of blockchain solutions in healthcare with GDPR and/or other regulations about personal data protection.
Block.co Team Answer: The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Europe’s new framework for data protection laws, has a vital impact on healthcare organizations. During this more and more patient-centric world where global healthcare organizations collect a large set of data on patients to produce improved health outcomes, this increased regulation has an even larger impact.
GDPR presents challenges across all industries and includes language that has a special impact on healthcare. The regulation defines “personal” data as “any information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person (data subject); an identifiable natural person is one who can be identified, directly or indirectly, in particular by reference to an identifier such as a name, an identification number, location data, an online identifier or to one or more factors specific to the physical, physiological, genetic, mental, economic, cultural or social identity of that natural person.” On top of this definition, GDPR contains three extra, important definitions that pertain to health data:
  1. “Data concerning health” is defined by the GDPR as “personal data related to the physical or mental health of a natural person, including the provision of health care services, which reveal information about his or her health status.”
  2. “Genetic data” is outlined by the GDPR as “personal data relating to inherited or acquired genetic characteristics of a natural person which give unique information about the physiology or the health of that natural person and which result, in particular, from an analysis of a biological sample from the natural person in question.”
  3. “Biometric data” is “personal data resulting from specific technical processing relating to the physical, physiological, or behavioral characteristics of a natural person, which allows or confirms the unique identification of that natural person, such as facial images or dactyloscopic data.”
As described in Article 6 of GDPR, processing of personal data is considered lawful if: (1) the data subject has given consent; (2) it is necessary for the performance of a contract to which the data subject is a party; (3) it is necessary for compliance with a legal obligation; (4) it is necessary to protect the vital interest of the data subject or another natural person; (5) it is necessary for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest; (6) it is necessary for the purposes of the legitimate interests pursued by the controller or third party.
However, healthcare organizations that usually manage health data, have an added responsibility to take care of “data concerning health,” “genetic data,” and “biometric data” to a higher standard of protection than personal data, in general. GDPR prohibits the processing of these forms of health data unless one of the three conditions below would apply as per Article 9.
a. The data subject must have given “explicit consent.”
b. “Processing is necessary for the purposes of preventive or occupational medicine, for the assessment of the working capacity of the employee, medical diagnosis, the provision of health or social care or treatment or the management of health or social care systems and services …”
c. “Processing is necessary for reasons of public interest in the area of public health, such as protecting against serious cross-border threats to health or ensuring high standards of quality and safety of health care and of medicinal products or medical devices …”
Consent VS Explicit Consent – If one pays attention, there’s a difference in the GDPR’s health data use conditions (calls for “explicit consent”) and the general definition (calls for “consent”). Thus, there’s an ongoing debate as to what constitutes the difference between “unambiguous” and “explicit” consent. Despite the debate and the final legal clarifications, there is no doubt that in the purposes of the healthcare the “explicit consent” must have the strongest agreement form listing in detail the use(s) of data and covering the cases of data transfers and storage.
Question 3: How can we use blockchain technology by the government in Africanflavored government, say by Ministry of health to have patient autonomy of medical records that can be accessed by any government hospital irrespective of the ailment and record printed by the previous hospital and doctor, such as referral cases without having to open a new file in the referred hospital.
Block.co Team Answer: Perhaps that would be an ideal implementation of the Block.co solution issuing a digital certificate of medical examination on an Open Public Blockchain such as the Bitcoin blockchain, that would be decentralized in nature, easy to validate online without any special wallets, and would be provided by the patient on-demand, to refer to treatments received in other hospitals or areas. But this would require that the practitioner is aware and can use the open-source code or use Block.co services to issue these certificates. Alternatively, there could be the use of a wallet to store these medical credentials to be submitted on demand to health practitioners. Moreover, there would need to be an alignment of regulation in the matter as decentralized repositories are not recognized at the moment.

Question 4: Is there any data breach threat in the blockchain using a poorly protected private key at communication?
Block.co Team Answer: Millions of health care records have already been breached, and in attempts to combat this issue, solutions often result in the inaccessibility of health records. Health providers often send information to other providers, and this often ends up in mishandling of data, losing records, or passing on inaccurate and old data. In some cases, only one copy of an updated health record exists, and this may result in the loss of information. Health records often contain personal information such as names, social security numbers, and home addresses. When it comes to Blockchain in Healthcare, a poorly protected private key is always a factor to consider. A private key allows us to sign a transaction and spend funds residing in an address (public key) by providing ownership with the signature. It is a unique string of information that represents proof of identification inside the blockchain, which includes the right to access and control the participant’s wallet. It must be kept secret, as it is effectively a personal password. In the case that that private key is poorly protected, there is always a data breach threat.
Question 5: The medical record of a patient is owned by the patient. What happens if a doctor accesses the record without the consent of the patient? Using the smart contract, could there be a governing body, say a legal system that can call the doctor to order?
Block.co Team Answer: Rather than having each physical and electronic copies of records, blockchains may enable the shift to electronic health records (EHR). When looking at Blockchain in Healthcare, medical records on the blockchain would be within the management of the patient rather than a third party, through the patients’ private and public keys. Patients may then control access to their health records, making transferring information less cumbersome. Because blockchain ledgers are immutable, health information may not be deleted or tampered with. Blockchain transactions would be accompanied by a timestamp, permitting those with access to maintain updated information. The doctor would not be able to access the record without the consent of the patient. A patient would need to sign the transaction in a smart contract in order to transfer patient details to the doctor.
Question 6: So, how are private data protected when the patient is simply notified that unauthorized access just took place on her medical record? and, how are the negative results of this breach rectified towards the patient?
Block.co Team Answer: The patient would be notified to sign a transaction enabling access to the party requesting access to the specific medical record. In other cases, there could be a multi-signature wallet requiring multiple transactions in the cases where the patient may need assistance, for example, when underage or when not in a healthy state of mind, or being non-responsive or in critical condition. The patient needs to be responsible for his own data and be empowered through awareness and know-how of this technology. With great power, comes also great responsibility, although it is yet a challenge to enable computer illiterate people to interact with this technology.
Question 7: Can the same record of a patient still be shared with private hospitals and say another government/private hospital abroad on the same blockchain?
Block.co Team Answer: Depending on whether the information is on a public blockchain or a private blockchain. When on a private blockchain, they will need to be granted permission to access the blockchain accordingly.
Question 8: No one has directly spoken about ownership where a large research institution/ consortium is working with the data – it is not solely the person who has said so…
Block.co Team Answer: Indeed, it is solely not the person who has a say so. Technology may be used in both evil and good ways and it is still the obligation and responsibility of people within governments to ensure human liberties and rights are preserved when utilizing such powerful technologies such as blockchain and sometimes the combination of blockchain with AI, IoT, and biometrics. Blockchain in Healthcare, in the same way, that it can empower individuals and increase their standard of living and prosperity, at the same time, it can also empower corrupt governments with alternative agendas and totalitarian states. Cardano is not just a Wallet

From time to time, somewhere on social media, the FUD appears about the Cardano project. We can see opinions like “Cardano is just a wallet”, “Cardano never launches main-net”, “PoS will never work”, or “it’s just white-paper”. These are all opinions based on impatience, ignorance of the depth and complexity of the project, or the inability to objectively assess the matter. Often, this FUD is caused intentionally by supporters of a competing project. Just to make competitors more relevant.
Let’s look at some facts in today’s article.
Cardano is a very complex project
Cardano is the first project that is based on formal method development and it is built as a mission-critical project. The IOHK team has done thorough research on all areas related to blockchain and distributed networks. The team studied existing works and sought the best solutions to technical problems in a real environment. The team has published many scientific studies that have undergone a rigorous review and today have countless citations. The team starts production software development only after the specifications are available. The critical parts of the project are written in Haskell. Haskell is a functional programming language that doesn’t allow any side-effects.
Blockchain incorporates technological, economic and social components. It is a system that aims to replace the current financial system and compete with the current IT giants. Such a project cannot be done just by giving you a bunch of programmers to make you a mix of Bitcoin and Ethereum. Without an emphasis on overall quality and details, such a system will never work reliably in the long term. On the other hand, such a project can be delivered in just one year. Do we need it?
Cardano took a different and more challenging path. If the team simply delivered another blockchain, it would rank among hundreds of similar projects. It was necessary to put together experts to cryptography, software security, distributed networking, threat modeling, protocol design, game theory, operating systems, designers of programming languages, economy, and of course, software architects and programmers. All these people had to work together to deliver the network that would be great in all respects. These are people who are respected leaders in their field and often at the top of their careers.
If one network is to serve the whole world, it must be capable of global scalability. It must never stop and allow all people on the planet to freely engage in network consensus. Including cheaters. Such a network will be massively attacked. Cardano must endure it and continue to function smoothly. It is a more complex task than you might think. And believe me, there are not many people in the world who could fully understand that in all details.
It takes a lot of time and effort to build such a project. No existing project is capable of mass adoption and is at the same time demonstrably secure and sustainable in the long term. Cardano will be. Global, open, public, permissionless networks are brand new. There was nothing like that before Bitcoin. The first generation of cryptocurrencies suffers from technological imperfection. Often they are in the experimental phase and are improving in full operation. In the case of Bitcoin, everybody is scared to change the first layer, as there is a legitimate concern that something will fail. The second layer can improve something, but it will always creak. The quality of the project is directly related to the quality of the team and the time spent on research, experimentation, implementation, and testing. These phases can’t be underestimated or omitted. If you do, it will fire back at you later. We can see thousands of projects on CoinMarketCap, but few are worth the attention. In ten years, there will be maybe only three of them.
Transparency
Cardano is one of the most transparent projects in the crypto. CEO of IOHK, Charles Hoskinson, does AMA and status updates very often. Sometimes several times in one month. During AMA you can ask him literally what you want. Other team members have recently started updating us as well. Cardano, as one of the few projects, has all its scientific works publicly available. Anyone can look into them and critically review the content. The number of works increases regularly. If anyone has doubts about the quality of the project, they can try to find some mistakes in these works. And believe me, it will be hard.
This work by itself has already pushed the crypt forward by a great deal. So far, nobody has worked out exactly what the ledger is and how it should work, whether PoW is really safe, how to write smart contracts safely, how to create a sustainable economic model, etc. All other projects can benefit from this work.
Do not believe that? Well, we can give you one of the many possible examples. Aggelos Kiayias is the chair in cybersecurity and privacy at the University of Edinburgh. His research interests are in computer security, information security, applied cryptography, and foundations of cryptography with a particular emphasis on blockchain technologies and distributed systems, e-voting and secure multiparty protocols, as well as privacy and identity management. He joined IOHK in 2017 as a chief scientist through a long-term consulting agreement between IOHK and the University of Edinburgh, where he is also the director of the Blockchain Technology Laboratory. Aggelos is one of the brains behind Ouroboros PoS. It is relatively easy to find the works in which he participated and the number of citations.
You can just open any scientific paper from IOHK, check the list of authors and find the number of citations. You can also easily verify there is no competitor in the whole crypto. Of course, the important thing is to get the scientific work into the source code. And that happens. You can check out GitHub for all the project repositories.
Be careful, many people and aggregation sites for some reason only look at the cardano-sl repository. Look at them all!
We understand that if you are not a programmer, it will be difficult to judge the quality of code. You just have to educate yourself here if you really want to know what is going on on GitHub. Activity is compared by the number of commits, which is some modification of the source code. Usually, a new piece is added or something old is deleted.
You can easily look at the details of each repository. You can see how many people are actively developing the code, you can see what they are working on, how often they add changes, and more. Let’s have a look at the Ouroboros-network repository.
Shelley protocol is written in Haskell. The quality and activity of the project can also be judged well by the number of new and already solved issues.
If you are in any doubt about any project, learn how to read GitHub activity. In the case of the Cardano project, be absolutely calm. The activity is one of the highest, if not absolutely highest, in the entire crypto-sphere. If anyone tells you otherwise, please refer to the IOHK library and GitHub. You can even check out the site where all the Cardano GitHub data is altogether.
Delays are usual in software development
We have already talked about how complex the Cardano project is. Believe me, delays are a common thing when creating software. There are plenty of well-described reasons for that. Every software engineer could confirm that. Let’s dive into it just a bit.
An accurate estimate during making a software plan is nearly impossible. You always have a bunch of items and tasks for a bunch of engineers. Tasks often overlap and depend on each other. To make it worse, tasks are mostly abstract and it is often hard to predict all possible obstacles. You can measure the performance of the team to improve time estimates but still, you never know when a plan is going to fail due to unexpected problems. Team members have to work together years to have solid certainty about all estimates. Cardano team is international so coordination might a bit more demanding. When some small and seemingly unnecessary tasks are skipped at the beginning, it can happen that there will be unexpected delays just because they have to be handled later. And sometimes, plan or priorities changes.
Many engineers are very optimistic when asked how long some tasks could take. They are often wrong. In reality, tasks are usually more complex than engineers think. Team members change over time. IT gurus are a special kind. They like to change jobs very often. If a team expert leaves the team, it may take longer to find an adequate replacement. This also causes a delay. The IOHK team has a lot of members.
Delivering 90% of functionality can be relatively easy compared to the last 10%. The biggest problems can arise at the end of development when all the individual components are tested together. Problems encountered at the end of development must be addressed. This often means changing a lot of things or redesigning something. Testing itself is very demanding as a global network must be simulated or the setup. In addition, the software must run on different versions of operating systems.
Let’s have a look at some famous software delays. Mac OS X was developed under the name Rhapsody and it was 1997. Version 1 release arrived after 4 years. Windows Vista was originally planned to ship in 2003. Thre was 3 years delay.
If you look for more examples, you will find many. A project like Cardano can’t simply be done in a year or two. If Shelley is launched this year, it will actually be very fast. If you look at examples from the crypto-world, you will see a big delay in the delivery of Ethereum 2.0. Count how long the Lightning Network has been built. And look at how many errors and failures we’ve seen. These failures have often led to large financial losses. If you were looking for reasons, you would find that it is caused by a badly designed or implemented software.
Of course, it is in the best interest of the team to deliver Cardano to the market as quickly as possible. But certainly not at the cost of technical imperfections. This is not a race against time. A year or two has almost no role if we can see a really good and functional, secure network capable of mass adoption.
Learn patience. Software delivery has its phases. First, everything has to be well thought out and designed. The team must be built. Then research and experiments are carried out. During this, the first source code can be written. Then the testing phase takes place. Only after all this can the network reach the public.
Testnet has been launched
Testnet has been running since the end of 2019. And it is a great success. The team expected an interest of about 100 pool operators. There are over 1000 registered pools. The network is stable and runs almost without problems. People’s interest in Cardano is huge. Community people are working on useful tools. Just check adapools.org or pooltool.io. Pool operators have no problem communicating with the team. All problems are gradually solved and many of them very quickly.
Everyone in the world can run their own node and become a pool operator. Who claims that Cardano is just a wallet, he should try it for himself.
Do you like smart contracts? Do you want to write one? Well, you can try it. Cardano will have Plutus and Marlowe. You can try both of them on the online playground.
No Lambo, sorry
Cardano’s not here to get you a Lambo. Charles promised to deliver the most decentralized network, secure smart contracts, project governance and resolved scalability. All based on scientific research. If such a network can be delivered and people adopt it, only then can we say that the team has succeeded. Will that affect the price of ADA coins? Definitely yes. The team must be fully focused on development. Not for the price. So do not complain about the price. Nobody is going to help you. Only you are responsible.
Summary
IOHK is one of the best teams in the crypto. There is a lot of work behind this team. Everyone can look at it. Nothing is patented. Everything is open-source. We cannot forget to Emurgo and Cardano Foundation. These entities, too, are completely transparent, and much work can be seen behind them. See for yourself. If someone doesn’t see it and claims that Cardano is just a wallet, he must be blind and deaf. The delays in delivering such complex software as Cardano are quite common. Rather, it would be appropriate to say that the team is moving very fast. Cardano has come so far that neither Microsoft nor IBM will be able to compete. Thanks to Cardano, the whole crypto will move up a lot and be more relevant. If you don’t believe anything we have written, you have many opportunities to check it out. Resource Repository update + statement on IB communities and groups

EDIT 2018-04-07: With regards to the WhatsApp community: As far as we at /IBO know, the previous leader of the WhatsApp community is no longer affiliated with the groups. We hope that this signifies a move away from their past and development into a welcoming, academically honest environment for all members. However, the moderation team has decided that for the time being, WhatsApp group links are still banned. This is because of two reasons: firstly, to give time to ensure that all of these past behaviours have been eradicated, and secondly, due to concerns with sharing personal information (mobile numbers) on this subreddit.
To the best of my knowledge, there will be an update regarding the status of ibdocuments.com coming out very soon.

As you have hopefully already heard, the ibdocuments.com website was taken down earlier today following a DMCA takedown notice from the IB. A new server will be set up once the hosts can afford a more secure one, but this will likely take quite a while as it relies entirely on donations. Until then, the hosts will be setting up temporary repositories on various content sharing websites, as before, with the links available on https://ibresources.github.io/ as before. However, as this is a time consuming process, some downtime will be involved, and due to more frequent DMCAs it is very likely that these repositories will be offline fairly often. Please remember to download any resources you believe you might need in the future - there is no guarantee that they will still be there when you do actually need them.
It has recently come to the moderation team's attention that there is a second online community dedicated to the IB, active particularly on Reddit and WhatsApp, which brands itself quite similarly to /IBO. Unfortunately, it appears that this community is led by a previous member of this community who was banned for breaching our academic honesty guidelines, and who uses his administrative position in those other communities to harass certain members of the community. In addition, they decided to clone and rehost the entire ibdocuments website which was originally set up by /IBO contributors TemplarKnight98 and AlpineTrust, with advertisements displayed on top - essentially making money out of the work of others. They have claimed responsibility for the DMCA notice that took down ibdocuments, presumably as a method to try and increase visibility and revenue for their cloned website.
In light of all of this, we have made the following decisions, effective immediately:
  • Links to the copied resource repository are not permitted on /IBO, and will be removed automatically.
  • Links to IB WhatsApp groups are not permitted on /IBO, and will be removed automatically.
In addition, we strongly advise that all members steer clear of these resources. The founder and administrator of these resources is a known proponent of cheating, and the /IBO moderation team has evidence of him approaching underage women to pursue sexual images. As WhatsApp groups require sharing your phone number with everyone else in the group, you do not know for certain who receives your personal information, which may be unsafe. The only other IB group currently affiliated with /IBO is the /IBO Discord server, linked in the sidebar of the subreddit.
If you have experience with harassment related to the WhatsApp groups and would like to speak out about it, please contact me in private - either via Reddit private messages, Discord at ashy#1063, or my e-mail address: [email protected]. As this is a serious breach of laws, we wish to take this to the authorities to stop other girls from having to suffer the same fate.

So I noticed a lot of people recently (including myself) are experiencing the error "Wallet daemon can not be run. Check if daemon does not already run" when trying to open up their ZCL Eleos wallet, and people are unable to access their funds or cannot export their private keys as well. A solution to this is now official (thanks to JBrutWhat from the BTCP team for helping me out on this.) Note: Post is being edited as more info becomes available to me.
This solution also works for users who are on the ZClassic Swing wallet experiencing the error "A general unexpected critical error has occurred: error: Couldn't connect to server, see the console output for more detailed error information!."
Eleos Wallet Troubleshooting section
ZClassic Electrum Wallet
  1. Create a new standard wallet and restore the 2FA wallet using your "seed" codes. DO NOT password protect this wallet.
  2. Disable the 2FA feature when presented with the option.
  3. Navigate to C:/Users/YOUR-NAME/AppData/Roaming/Electrum-zcl/wallets. Open the new standard wallet file with Notepad.
  4. You will need to gather the 2 private keys and one public key. To find this easily, press “CTRL+F” and search for “xprv”. Copy the 2 “xprv” values as well as the last “xpub” value. You will need these in a later step.
  5. Create a new “Multi-signature wallet”. Select “From 3 co-signers” on the first slider. Select “Require 2 signatures” on the second slider.
  6. To add the first co-signer, click “Use public or private keys”. Enter the first xprv key in this box.
  7. Add the second co-signer via a private key also.
  8. Add the third co-signer with the public key. Complete the set-up.
  9. Your wallet funds now have the ability to be sent from the multi-signature wallet.
For Users who were already using the Electrum wallet beforehand, you can go to file > new/restore wallet > next > import zclassic private keys and input the private key you obtained from the walletaid tool, and it should import the wallet into the electrum wallet. Then from there, go to file > backup wallet and export a copy of the wallet.dat file onto an offline USB.
Reminder: Backup and delete the private keys file from your desktop pc/hard drive, move it into an offline USB for safekeeping. Do not leave it on an online device.

My analysis of the $1 million+ USD MyBTGWallet.com scam

Pre-content edit: Many of the links have been edited to be "hxxp" links and moved to the end of the post to minimize the chance of somebody accidentally accessing malicious software. If you try to visit a link and it doesn't appear valid, check if it's an "hxxp" link and change it to "http"
Search the Internet (or reddit) for mybtgwallet today, and you'll find several results about people losing all of their Bitcoin after inputting their mnemonic phrase into MyBTGWallet, a website claiming to be an online web wallet for Bitcoin Gold where users could check their BTG balance and, ostensibly, one day use the website to transact with their Bitcoin Gold.
I have no reason to believe that anybody involved with Bitcoin Gold was involved with this scam, but they did have a conversation with the creator of the website and help him test its balance reporting features[1] and did list it under the Wallets section of their website from November 12[2] to November 14[3], so at the very least they are guilty of carelessness and negligence.
In reports online, many affected users reported their Bitcoin having been swept to this wallet, although this website lists several other Bitcoin wallets, totalling over $1 million USD in stolen Bitcoin.
The source code for the site technically exists[4], but the repository has an upload date of November 15, where the conversation linked above took place last month. Clearly the repository was deleted and the code was scrubbed and reuploaded.
(Note from Future Uejji: The link above is broken. At the time I made this post, it contained a clean version of the scam code. I don't believe you're missing out by not being able to examine it today.)
Luckily, while trying to "help" audit the MyBTGWallet code, Technophant forked[5] the code, which gave us donate address for JohnDass. Notice also that this address was displayed on the site on November 13[6] but was changed by the next day[7].
(Note from Future Uejji: It doesn't seem like the version of the code Technophant forked and audited contained the malicious code I describe below. However, I don't think this should excuse the team from revalidating it once the website went live.)
It seems as if JohnDass tried to cover his tracks. However, the address above has a transaction linking it to the above mentioned scammer's wallet. Either JohnDass himself was also scammed by his very own wallet or he is the actual scammer.
Now, that's all well and good, but how did he do it?
My first clue was the snapshot version of bitcoinjs.min.js[8]. Despite being a .min.js, the code was niceified. So I compared it against a legitimate version of the bitcoinjs code and found an interesting change.
In hdnode.js, lines 34,35:

Compare this to the version on MyBTGWallet:

This son-of-a-bitch buried this nefarious line of code right in the middle of the bitcoin javascript library. But what does it do?
Well, I checked the website's other javascript files for gtag, and here's what I found:
MyBTGWallet's version of bip39.min.js[9] has also been niceified. I don't have to compare it to the actual source, though, because searching for gtag brought up this section:

Two guesses what the mnemonic variable is. This function is called just a few lines up in the same file:

So, whenever mnemomnicToSeed() is called, the user-input mnemonic is saved to window.gtagm, which later on is obfuscated to Base64 (which is what the btoa() function does), and then appended to a _gtag parameter on the document cookie. Any of you who have ever used Google Analytics might see where this is going.
At the very end of the website's primary javascript code[10] lives a little bit of code meant to enable Google Analytics, which happily snaps up the user's cookie on the site and stores it for the scammer to view later.
Note that this was just a small amount of code that enabled this scheme. Even trying to trace what connections the website was making all looked legit, except for Google Analytics, which he claimed to be using to track website usage.
So, to summarize, every time someone entered their mnemonic seed into MyBTGWallet, their mnemonic was Base64 encoded, stored on the website cookie and then transmitted to Google, where the scammer was free to decode it and have full access to that person's private keys derived from that seed.
And that's how somebody scammed the Bitcoin community out of over $1 million USD and scammed the Bitcoin Gold team into recommending his website to do so.

EDIT 3: It looks like archive.org is being inconsistent about the availability of the above links. They were all available when I posted the links. Probably some of their servers have the files and others don't.
EDIT 4: Several people have talked about hoping this scammer could be tracked down, etc. While not impossible, I consider it practically impossible that this person will be tracked down.
I primarily made this post to illustrate how simple this entire attack was from start to finish. So, here's my tl;dr for you:
  1. Always assume somebody is going to try to steal your crypto, especially if it's Bitcoin.
  2. Never trust anybody with your private key or mnemonic, even if you would trust that person otherwise.
  3. To expand on 2, IF ANYBODY TELLS YOU THAT A THIRD PARTY CAN BE TRUSTED WITH YOUR PRIVATE KEY OR MNEMONIC, YOUR DEFAULT ACTION SHOULD BE DISTRUST. Distrust the third party and distrust whoever is telling you to trust the third party, unless/until safety can be rigorous proven.
  4. Your private key or mnemonic is the only thing proving that you own and can control your crypto. DO NOT GIVE IT TO ANYONE. DO NOT ENTER IT ANYWHERE IT COULD BE COPIED OR STORED. DON'T EVEN COPY AND PASTE IT IF YOU CAN HELP IT.
  5. Finally, WHEN YOUR CRYPTO IS GONE, IT IS GONE. There is no company to give you a refund, no bank to reverse your transaction. Any stories you read about stolen crypto that was recovered were just stories. Never assume they could happen to you.
PEOPLE ARE GOING TO TRY TO MANIPULATE YOU INTO GIVING THEM ACCESS TO YOUR CRYPTO. IF YOU LET THEM, YOUR CRYPTO WILL BE GONE FOREVER.

Electrum Personal Server - The best way to connect your hardware wallet to your full node

Electrum is a popular bitcoin wallet, but it is not a full node wallet as it synchronizes itself using third-party Electrum servers. The servers must be trusted to verify the rules of bitcoin, they can trick Electrum wallets into accepting fake bitcoin transactions which, for example, print infinite money. Bitcoin's security model requires that most economic activity is backed by full nodes. The Electrum servers must also be trusted with the user's privacy, as wallets send all their bitcoin addresses to the server. Spying on wallets is not much more complicated than simply grepping the server logs. Electrum wallets by default also connect to servers using their own IP address, linking it further to their revealed bitcoin addresses.
A way to avoid these problems is for users to run their own Electrum server and connect their wallets only to it. But this requires significant resource usage: the full unpruned blockchain, transaction index and an extra address index, as well as more RAM and CPU usage compared to just a full node. Servers are not well suited to being shut down and started up again, they are typically always online.
Electrum servers store a database of every bitcoin address ever used, which is inherently not scalable. This is resource-intensive and therefore pushes users towards centralized solutions. An alternative way would be to store only your own addresses and transactions.
Introducing Electrum Personal Server; an implementation of the Electrum server protocol which fulfills the specific need of using the Electrum UI with full node verification and privacy, but without the heavyweight server backend, for a single user. It allows the user to benefit from all of Bitcoin Core's resource-saving features like pruning, blocksonly and disabled txindex. All of Electrum's feature-richness like hardware wallet integration, multisignature wallets, offline signing, mnemonic recovery phrases and so on can still be used, but backed by the user's own full node.

Before using, the wallet user must configure Electrum Personal Server with their master public key and those addresses are imported into Bitcoin Core as watch-only. If the wallet contains historical transactions then it must be rescanned. One of Electrum's motivating features is "instant on", which is therefore traded away when using Electrum Personal Server in return for full node verification and privacy. Although if a brand new empty wallet is created there is no need to rescan. A script like Electrum Personal Server is also well suited to use private transaction broadcasting tech like dandelion or broadcasting through tor.
Using Electrum with Electrum Personal Server is probably the most resource-efficient way right now to use a hardware wallet connected to your own full node. People who make use of Blockstream Satellite could use it to have an off-the-grid node connected to Electrum if that is their preferred wallet. In the situation of a traveller staying a cheap hostels, they could sync their node every couple of days to download recent blocks and use Electrum. Hopefully this software can be part of the plan to get full node wallets into the hands of as many people as possible.
The same kind of ideas could be applied to other lightweight wallets. For example a full nodes can run on smartphones with pruning and blocksonly, then a similar script would allow the user to connect their Samourai Wallet, Breadwallet or GreenAddress app to their own full node.

Development

dcrd: Version 1.3.0 RC1 (Release Candidate 1) is out! The main features of this release are significant performance improvements, including some that benefit SPV clients. Full release notes and downloads are on GitHub.
The default minimum transaction fee rate was reduced from 0.001 to 0.0001 DCkB. Do not try to send such small fee transactions just yet, until the majority of the network upgrades.
Release process was changed to use release branches and bump version on the master branch at the beginning of a release cycle. Discussed in this chat.
The codebase is ready for the new Go 1.11 version. Migration to vgo module system is complete and the 1.4.0 release will be built using modules. The list of versioned modules and a hierarchy diagram are available here.
The testnet was reset and bumped to version 3.
Comments are welcome for the proposal to implement smart fee estimation, which is important for Lightning Network.
@matheusd recorded a code review video for new Decred developers that explains how tickets are selected for voting.
dcrwallet: Version 1.3.0 RC1 features new SPV sync mode, new ticket buyer, new APIs for Decrediton and a host of bug fixes. On the dev side, dcrwallet also migrated to the new module system.
Decrediton: Version 1.3.0 RC1 adds the new SPV sync mode that syncs roughly 5x faster. The feature is off by default while it receives more testing from experienced users. Other notable changes include a design polish and experimental Politeia integration.
Politeia: Proposal editing is being developed and has a short demo. This will allow proposal owners to edit their proposal in response to community feedback before voting begins. The challenges associated with this feature relate to updating censorship tokens and maintaining a clear history of which version comments were made on. @fernandoabolafio produced this architecture diagram which may be of interest to developers.
@degeri joined to perform security testing of Politeia and found several issues.
dcrdata: mainnet explorer upgraded to v2.1 with several new features. For users: credit/debit tx filter on address page, showing miner fees on coinbase transaction page, estimate yearly ticket rewards on main page, cool new hamburger menu and keyboard navigation. For developers: new chain parameters page, experimental Insight API support, endpoints for coin supply and block rewards, testnet3 support. Lots of minor API changes and frontend tweaks, many bug fixes and robustness improvements.
The upcoming v3.0 entered beta and is deployed on beta.dcrdata.org. Check out the new charts page. Feedback and bug reports are appreciated. Finally, the development version v3.1.0-pre is on alpha.dcrdata.org.
Android: updated to be compatible with the latest SPV code and is syncing, several performance issues are worked on. Details were posted in chat. Alpha testing has started, to participate please join #dev and ask for the APK.
iOS: backend is mostly complete, as well as the front end. Support for devices with smaller screens was improved. What works now: creating and recovering wallets, listing of transactions, receiving DCR, displaying and scanning QR codes, browsing account information, SPV connection to peers, downloading headers. Some bugs need fixing before making testable builds.
Ticket splitting: v0.6.0 beta released with improved fee calculation and multiple bug fixes.
docs: introduced new Governance section that grouped some old articles as well as the new Politeia page.
@Richard-Red created a concept repository sandbox with policy documents, to illustrate the kind of policies that could be approved and amended by Politeia proposals.
decred.org: 8 contributors added and 4 removed, including 2 advisors (discussion here).
decredmarketcap.com is a brand new website that shows the most accurate DCR market data. Clean design, mobile friendly, no javascript required.
Dev activity stats for August: 239 active PRs, 219 commits, 25k added and 11k deleted lines spread across 8 repositories. Contributions came from 2-10 developers per repository. (chart)

Network

Hashrate: went from 54 to 76 PH/s, the low was 50 and the new all-time high is 100 PH/s. BeePool share rose to ~50% while F2Pool shrank to 30%, followed by coinmine.pl at 5% and Luxor at 3%.
Staking: 30-day average ticket price is 95.6 DCR (+3.0) as of Sep 3. During the month, ticket price fluctuated between a low of 92.2 and high of 100.5 DCR. Locked DCR represented between 3.8 and 3.9 million or 46.3-46.9% of the supply.
Nodes: there are 217 public listening and 281 normal nodes per dcred.eu. Version distribution: 2% at v1.4.0(pre) (dev builds), 5% on v1.3.0 (RC1), 62% on v1.2.0 (-5%), 22% on v1.1.2 (-2%), 6% on v1.1.0 (-1%). Almost 69% of nodes are v.1.2.0 and higher and support client filters. Data snapshot of Aug 31.

ASICs

Obelisk posted 3 email updates in August. DCR1 units are reportedly shipping with 1 TH/s hashrate and will be upgraded with firmware to 1.5 TH/s. Batch 1 customers will receive compensation for missed shipment dates, but only after Batch 5 ships. Batch 2-5 customers will be receiving the updated slim design.
Innosilicon announced the new D9+ DecredMaster: 2.8 TH/s at 1,230 W priced $1,499. Specified shipping date was Aug 10-15.
FFMiner DS19 claims 3.1 TH/s for Blake256R14 at 680 W and simultaneously 1.55 TH/s for Blake2B at 410 W, the price is $1,299. Shipping Aug 20-25.
Another newly noticed miner offer is this unit that does 46 TH/s at 2,150 W at the price of $4,720. It is shipping Nov 2018 and the stats look very close to Pangolin Whatsminer DCR (which has now a page on asicminervalue).

www.d1pool.com joined the list of stakepools for a total of 16.
Australian CoinTree added DCR trading. The platform supports fiat, there are some limitations during the upgrade to a new system but also no fees in the "Early access mode". On a related note, CoinTree is working on a feature to pay household bills with cryptocurrencies it supports.

Contribution to the @decredproject Twitter account has evolved over the past few months. A #twitter_ops channel is being used on Matrix to collaboratively draft and execute project account tweets (including retweets). Anyone with an interest in contributing to the Twitter account can ask for an invitation to the channel and can start contributing content and ideas there for evaluation by the Twitter group. Markets

DCR started the month at USD 56 / BTC 0.0073 and had a two week decline. On Aug 14 the whole market took a huge drop and briefly went below USD 200 billion. Bitcoin went below USD 6,000 and top 100 cryptos lost 5-30%. The lowest point coincided with Bitcoin dominance peak at 54.5%. On that day Decred dived -17% and reached the bottom of USD 32 / BTC 0.00537. Since then it went sideways in the USD 35-45 / BTC 0.0054-0.0064 range. Around Aug 24, Huobi showed DCR trading volume above USD 5M and this coincided with a minor recovery.

StopAndDecrypt published an extensive article "ASIC Resistance is Nothing but a Blockchain Buzzword" that is much in line with Decred's stance on ASICs.
The ongoing debates about the possible Sia fork yet again demonstrate the importance of a robust dispute resolution mechanism. Also, we are lucky to have the treasury.

Development

The biggest announcement of the month was the new kind of decentralized exchange proposed by @jy-p of Company 0. The Community Discussions section considers the stakeholders' response.
dcrd: Peer management and connectivity improvements. Some work for improved sighash algo. A new optimization that gives 3-4x faster serving of headers, which is great for SPV. This was another step towards multipeer parallel downloads – check this issue for a clear overview of progress and planned work for next months (and some engineering delight). As usual, codebase cleanup, improvements to error handling, test infrastructure and test coverage.
Decrediton: work towards watching only wallets, lots of bugfixes and visual design improvements. Preliminary work to integrate SPV has begun.
Politeia is live on testnet! Useful links: announcement, introduction, command line voting example, example proposal with some votes, mini-guide how to compose a proposal.
Trezor: Decred appeared in the firmware update and on Trezor website, currently for testnet only. Next steps are mainnet support and integration in wallets. For the progress of Decrediton support you can track this meta issue.

Network

Hashrate: growth continues, the month started at 15 and ended at 44 PH/s with some wild 30% swings on the way. The peak was 53.9 PH/s.
F2Pool was the leader varying between 36% and 59% hashrate, followed by coinmine.pl holding between 18% and 29%. In response to concerns about its hashrate share, F2Pool made a statement that they will consider measures like rising the fees to prevent growing to 51%.
Staking: 30-day average ticket price is 94.7 DCR (+3.4). The price was steadily rising from 90.7 to 95.8 peaking at 98.1. Locked DCR grew from 3.68 to 3.81 million DCR, the highest value was 3.83 million corresponding to 47.87% of supply (+0.7% from previous peak).
Nodes: there are 240 public listening and 115 normal nodes per dcred.eu. Version distribution: 57% on v1.2.0 (+12%), 25% on v1.1.2 (-13%), 14% on v1.1.0 (-1%). Note: the reported count of non-listening nodes has dropped significantly due to data reset at decred.eu. It will take some time before the crawler collects more data. On top of that, there is no way to exactly count non-listening nodes. To illustrate, an alternative data source, charts.dcr.farm showed 690 reachable nodes on Jul 1.
Extraordinary event: 247361 and 247362 were two nearly full blocks. Normally blocks are 10-20 KiB, but these blocks were 374 KiB (max is 384 KiB).

ASICs

Update from Obelisk: shipping is expected in first half of July and there is non-zero chance to meet hashrate target.
Another Chinese ASIC spotted on the web: Flying Fish D18 with 340 GH/s at 180 W costing 2,200 CNY (~340 USD). (asicok.comtranslated, also on asicminervalue)
dcrASIC team posted a farewell letter. Despite having an awesome 16 nm chip design, they decided to stop the project citing the saturated mining ecosystem and low profitability for their potential customers.

Integrations

bepool.org is a new mining pool spotted on dcred.eu.
Exchange integrations:
Two OTC trading desks are now shown on decred.org exchanges page.
BitPro payment gateway added Decred and posted on Reddit. Notably, it is fully functional without javascript or cookies and does not ask for name or email, among other features.
Guarda Wallet integrated Decred. Currently only in their web wallet, but more may come in future. Notable feature is "DCR purchase with a bank card". See more details in their post or ask their representative on Reddit. Important: do your best to understand the security model before using any wallet software.

Adoption

Merchants:
BlueYard Capital announced investment in Decred and the intent to be long term supporters and to actively participate in the network's governance. In an overview post they stressed core values of the project:
There are a few other remarkable characteristics that are a testament to the DNA of the team behind Decred: there was no sale of DCR to investors, no venture funding, and no payment to exchanges to be listed – underscoring that the Decred team and contributors are all about doing the right thing for long term (as manifested in their constitution for the project).
The most encouraging thing we can see is both the quality and quantity of high calibre developers flocking to the project, in addition to a vibrant community attaching their identity to the project.

An update on our communication systems:
Jake Yocom-Piatt did an AMA on CryptoTechnology, a forum for serious crypto tech discussion. Some topics covered were Decred attack cost and resistance, voting policies, smart contracts, SPV security, DAO and DPoS.
A new kind of DEX was the subject of an extensive discussion in #general, #random, #trading channels as well as Reddit. New channel #thedex was created and attracted more than 100 people.
A frequent and fair question is how the DEX would benefit Decred. @lukebp has put it well:
Projects like these help Decred attract talent. Typically, the people that are the best at what they do aren’t driven solely by money. They want to work on interesting projects that they believe in with other talented individuals. Launching a DEX that has no trading fees, no requirement to buy a 3rd party token (including Decred), and that cuts out all middlemen is a clear demonstration of the ethos that Decred was founded on. It helps us get our name out there and attract the type of people that believe in the same mission that we do. (slack)
Another concern that it will slow down other projects was addressed by @davecgh:
The intent is for an external team to take up the mantle and build it, so it won't have any bearing on the current c0 roadmap. The important thing to keep in mind is that the goal of Decred is to have a bunch of independent teams on working on different things. (slack)
A chat about Decred fork resistance started on Twitter and continued in #trading. Community members continue to discuss the finer points of Decred's hybrid system, bringing new users up to speed and answering their questions. The key takeaway from this chat is that the Decred chain is impossible to advance without votes, and to get around that the forker needs to change the protocol in a way that would make it clearly not Decred.

Markets

DCR opened the month at ~$93, reached monthly high of $110, gradually dropped to the low of $58 and closed at $67. In BTC terms it was 0.0125 -> 0.0150 -> 0.0098 -> 0.0105. The downturn coincided with a global decline across the whole crypto market.
In the middle of the month Decred was noticed to be #1 in onchainfx "% down from ATH" chart and on this chart by @CoinzTrader. Towards the end of the month it dropped to #3.

Obelisk announced Launchpad service. The idea is to work with coin developers to design a custom, ASIC-friendly PoW algorithm together with a first batch of ASICs and distribute them among the community.
Equihash-based ZenCash was hit by a double spend attack that led to a loss of $450,000 by the exchange which was targeted.
Almost one year after collecting funds, Tezos announced a surprise identification procedure to claim tokens (non-javascript version).
A hacker broke into Syscoin's GitHub account and implanted malware stealing passwords and private keys into Windows binaries. This is a painful reminder for everybody to verify binaries after download.
Circle announced new asset listing framework for Poloniex. Relevant to recent discussions of exchange listing bribery:

Zcash organized Zcon0, an event in Canada that focused on privacy tech and governance. An interesting insight from Keynote Panel on governance: "There is no such thing as on-chain governance".
Microsoft acquired GitHub. There was some debate about whether it is a reason to look into alternative solutions like GitLab right now. It is always a good idea to have a local copy of Decred source code, just in case.

Soo after almost 3 months of setting up I have my own LN full node running on RP3
I have been eager to try LN mainnet since the very beginning of it. I've found out about lnd, eclair, zap and other wallets but every scenario I tried to use it failed because of critical issues:
  • eclair does not really constitute a wallet, it's more like a credit card - you can send money but not receive it
  • lnd is okay, but requires a server and tons of resources for maintaining a full node, can't be used securely, efficiently and mobily at the same time
  • zap offers some cloud wallet (in testnet!) by default, this is a serious misunderstanding of my cryptoanarchy needs
  • web wallets - ah, forget it
So I've decided to use my Raspberry Pi with a very old laptop HDD attached (200GB so the pruning function has to be used) to create a backend wallet service and zap desktop (temporarily!) as my frontend control panel.

Setting up Pi is easy, lots of tutorials over the internet, not gonna discuss it here. Then I had to obtain bitcoind (current rel: bitcoin-0.17.0-arm-linux-gnueabihf.tar.gz) and lnd (lnd-linux-armv7-v0.5-beta.tar.gz), create a bitcoin technical user, deploy the tools, configure and install new systemd services and go through the configs. This is a tricky part, so let's share:

Whooaa, this online config generator is really helpful, but I still had to manually correct a few things. The last line is obviously generated by rpcauth.py, I disabled the wallet functionality as lnd is going to take care of my funds. ZMQ is not available to the network so only my LND can use it, RPC usage I still have to think through a little, in general I would like to have my own block explorer some day but also be safe from any hacking attempts (thus I would need at least 2 RPC ports/user accounts - one for lnd, one for block explorer frontend). No ports open on firewall at this time, only UPnP is active and gently opens 8333 for block/tx transfers.
Now, synchronizing the blockchain took me time from mid-July to early September... The hard drive is really slow, also my external HDD drive has some trouble with its A/C adapter so Pi was getting undervoltage alerts all the time. Luckily, it is just downclocking when it happens and slowly but steadily synchronized the whole history. After all, I'm not paying even $5 monthly for a VPS, it is by design the cheapest hardware I could use to set up my LN wallet.
When bitcoind was ready (I've heard some stories about btcd but I don't trust this software yet, sorry), it's time to configure lnd.conf:

Here I've had to XXX a little more fields, as not only the bitcoind RPC credentials are stored here, but also my node's public information (it should be illegal to run nodes without specifically selected color and alias!). It is public (and I had to open port 9735 on my firewall), but not necessarily connected to my reddit account for most of the adversaries, so let's keep it this way. In fact, I also see a security vulnerability here: my whole node's stability depends on the IP being static. I could swap it for a .tk domain but who can tell if the bad guys won't actively fight DNS system in order to prevent global economic revolution? As such, I would rather see node identification in LN based on a public key only with possible *hints* of last-known-ip-address but the whole discovery should be performed by the nodes themself in a p2p manner, obviously preventing malicious actors from poisoning the network in some way. For now, I consider the IP stability a weak link and will probably have to pay extra Bitcoin TX fees when something happens to it (not much of a cost luckily!).

Okay then, lnd is up and running, had to create a wallet and give it a night for getting up to speed. I don't know really what took it so long, I'm not using Windows nor 'localhost' in the config so the issues like #1027 are not the case. But there are others like #1545 still open so I'm not going to ponder much on this. I haven't really got any idea how to automatically unlock the wallet after Pi restart (could happen any time!), especially since I only tried to unlock it locally with lncli (why would I enter the password anywhere outside that host?), but let's say that my wallet will only be as stable as my cheap hardware. That's okay for the beta phase.
Finally, zap-desktop required me to copy tls.cert and admin.macaroon files to my desktop. If my understanding of macaroon (it's like an authentication cookie, that can later be revoked) is correct then it's not an issue, however it would be nice to have a "$50 daily limit" macaroon file in the future too, just to avoid any big issues when my client machine gets stolen. Thanks to this, I can ignore the silly cloud-based modes and have fully-secure environment of my home network being the only link from me to my money.

Aaand there it is. The IP took some time to advertise, I use 1ml.com to see if my node is there. The zap interface (ZapDesktop-linux-amd64-v0.2.2-beta.deb) lacks lots of useful information so I keep learning lncli syntax to get more data about my new peers or the routes offered. The transactions indeed run fast and are ridiculously cheap. I would really love to run Eclair with the same settings but it doesn't seem to support custom lnd (why?). In fact, since all I need is really a lncli wrapper, maybe it will be easy to write my own (seen some web gui which weighs 700MB after downloading all dependencies with npm - SICK!). Zap for iOS alpha test registration is DOWN so I couldn't try it (and I'm not sure if it allows custom lnd selection), Zap for Android doesn't even exist yet... I made a few demo transactions and now I will explore all those fancy t-shirt stores as long as the prices are still in "early investor" mode - I remember times when one could get 0.001 BTC from a faucet...

If you find any of the facts presented by me false, I am happy to find out more in the discussion. However what I did I did mostly for fun, without paying much attention to the source code, documentation and endless issue lists on github. By no means I claim this tutorial will work for you but I do think I shared the key points and effort estimations to help others decide if they want a full-node LN client too. I'm also interested in some ideas on what to do with it next (rather unlikely that I will share my lnd admin.macaroon with anyone!) especially if it gives me free money. For example, I can open 1000 channels and start earning money from fees, although I no longer have more Bitcoins than the LN capacity yields... I will probably keep updating the software on my Pi until it leaves beta phases and only then will pour more money inside. I'm also keen on improving the general security of my rig and those comments I will answer more seriously.

How to accept Dogecoin with your business, and why. A few pointers.

You are a business owner and sell goods or services. You heard about Dogecoin. You wonder how you can use it in your business. This thread is for you.
If you have no idea what Dogecoin is, read up on it here (click). In short, it is a digital currency that is perfect for everyday use. Read on if you want to know why it would be good for your enterprise.
Why should I accept payments in Dogecoin? 
Dogecoin offers you:
Dogecoin can be exchanged to national currencies. You can do this easily by yourself or use the automatic conversion offered by some payment processors (all is explained further down). You can also just keep your Dogecoin and spend it or offer it to your employees! :)
Dogecoin is fun and it gets ever more useful the more people like you use and accept it. There are other merchants who have gone this path before you - you can read interviews about them and their experiences on this blog. You can also talk with other merchants in /dogevendors, check out these testimonials ([1, 2], 3), search this subreddit and post any questions you have right here!
I want to accept donations. What are my options? 
Just download the client and put up the wallet address up on your page with donation info. Done! That's it! If you want something snazzy, check out this widget or this one (or this one) (or this one).
If you need to track who sent you how much money (for goodies and that), you could ask that donators tell you that they're sending you a very specific amount of coins (e.g. 100.424242), and match it to their name. However, this can be abused as your transaction history is public. If you're actually selling stuff, check out the next section instead.
I sell stuff online. What are my options? 
You have a lot! It boils down to one of these:
The last option can be interesting if you don't have your own web store, are selling digital goods and/or are just selling on as a side business. If your business is your main income, handling payment yourself is probably better.
1) Manually processing transactions
All you need for this is a Dogecoin wallet. You simply generate a payment address for each of your customers, send it to them and confirm that your coins arrived at the address. This is super fast to set up and there is absolutely no commitment.
If you just want to try it out before investing a lot of effort, just set up a wallet (either with the Dogecoin desktop client or an online wallet (listed under Browser "here") and let your customers know that they can now pay with Dogecoin. You can use some of these buttons if you wish( 1 2 3 4 5) and browse this asset repository of useful artwork. The graphical interface is still being developed, but you can browse the files and find license information already :)
2) Automatically processing transactions
Check out the section on APIs and payment processors further down!
3) Selling stuff through a 3rd-party site
There are a number of sites that function a lot like eBay, Etsy and Xmart. You enter your products and they handle the payment and web store stuff. This is most convenient if you have digital goods to sell (music, books...) and want to send them out automatically.

I sell from a physical store or location. What are my options? 
All you need is an internet connection in your store and a web-capable device, such as a mobile phone, cheap tablet or a nearby PC. On-site, your customers can send you coins using their phone, or you can sell coupons for your goods online in advance.
DogePos is a point-of-sales app that is open source and Koupah announced that they will accept Doge as well. You can use or apply for all of these tools right now! Either way, all you need is a way to 1) convert a USD price into Doge, and to 2) check that the coins have arrived in your wallet.
To check your wallet balance and Doge prices, you can use the app MyDOGE oniPhones and iPads, and this app on Android devices. This is one of many useful price converter websites you can bookmark. Checking your balance on the PC can be done with the wallet client.
If you want to sell your goods or coupons for them online, it might be easiest use a ready-made stores capable of digital distribution. Check point "3)" in the above section for some options.

You can probably find people who have used one of these in this thread. This guy volunteered his code for automatic currency conversion and his help setting up the plugin for OpenCart, for example!
If you are tech-inclined, you could run your own payment server with dogecoind and an API like this. This is not yet ready for laypeople though, so don't do that unless you want to get messy.
Exchanging Doge to USD/EUGBP/other national currencies 
If you don't have your payment processor do it for you, at some point you will want to get your Doge converted to your currency of choice, which you should do at an exchange. Keep in mind that you will have to get registered and verified at the exchange, which can take up to a week.
Transfers to and from national currency can take a few days, but trading and transferring digital currencies is very fast and usually near-instant. The following exchanges let you trade your Doge for national currency directly (last updated Sep 17):
If your currency is not listed above, you can either sell your Doge here, or exchange them to Bitcoin and then sell those. I find Kraken (EUR, KRW, USD) to be the best option for EUR, but you can sell Doge for BTC on all of the exchanges mentioned above, or choose one from this list. To sell BTC for national currency, you can also go to Justcoin or LocalBitcoins. There are many similar sites - just pick the one you like best!
Things get developed incredibly fast and Dogecoin is not even a year old. This will only get easier, so keep checking back! Justcoin is looking to trade Dogecoin to national currency, and others are sure to follow.
